Volumetric weight converts package dimensions into a weight-like figure so transport pricing reflects occupied space. A large, light box can therefore be charged above its scale weight.
Why space changes shipping cost
Aircraft and delivery vehicles have limited space as well as weight capacity. Lightweight products with large protective packaging can occupy substantial room. The dimensional calculation makes that space visible in the quoted charging basis.
Use the correct factor
Length, width and height must use the units expected by the dimensional formula. The divisor varies by carrier and service. Do not apply an express factor to every airfreight quote without checking the service terms.
A worked example
For a 60 × 40 × 40 cm box and divisor 5,000, dimensional weight is 19.2 kg. A scale weight of 10 kg does not remove that space requirement. Carrier rounding and service rules still need to be applied to reach the billed amount.
Reduce empty space carefully
Ask the supplier whether packaging can be made more compact while preserving protection. Avoid weakening cartons merely to reduce dimensions. Repacking can add labor and material cost, so compare the net benefit before proceeding.
